The Guild was formed soon after the 2008 24 Hour Comic Book Day Challenge, as an opportunity to regularly get together, socialize, and talk about comics and the creative process.

As a group, the Guild was responsible for continuing the 24 Hour Challenge in Spokane, numerous other events and workshops, and producing 2 anthology comics. And, most importantly, it has led to many friendships and creative partnerships which continue to this day.

While the individual members have continued to produce work and interact, both socially and professionally, the organized Guild group hasn't been active for some time. In light of this, we decided there was no longer a need to keep the "official" Guild sites up and running.

This site will remain as-is for the time being, but will no longer be updated; please note that the "comicsmithsguild.com" domain name will no longer be active as of the middle of this month, so will not re-direct to the site.

We would like to extend our thanks to all those who helped and supported the Guild during it's existence. If you are interested in seeing what the individual creators associated with the Guild are doing now, you can check out this page of links to their personal sites:
This two day show is co-produced by the fine folks responsible for Seattle's Emerald City ComiCon, and is already a healthy size for this being only its second year.

The Spokane area will have it's own representatives in attendance, of course, including: Joshua Covey, Manny Trembley, Matt Nelson, and the creators of Transolar Galactica!

Both Manny and Matt will have the first copies of their newest books (RGB & Catbeard Book 2, respectively) available for purchase at the show, and Joshua will have merchandise from his recently Kickstarted graphic novel Baako, along with preview pages for the book to check out.

Baako is an all-ages action adventure epic, telling "the story of a young girl coming of age in a world full of unimaginable terrors. She must find the courage to set out on a journey full of peril, loss, and betrayal and learn to overcome it all."

There are just three days remaining in the campaign, and it needs all the support it can get to reach its goal. Please spread the word and contribute if you can!

RGB is a wordless, full color, all-ages hardcover graphic novel. It is, in the creator's words, "an exploration of grief", and about "Life. Loss. Love. In that order."

Free Comic Book Day is this Saturday (May 4), and is a national event that provides retailers a lot of awesome comics, from a variety of publishers, that they can give away for free. There are three Spokane area stores participating this year - Merlyns, The Comic Book Shop, and Hastings.

Local artists will be at Merlyns both Saturday and Sunday, drawing free sketches for kids. There will be plenty of other events going on at the store both days, including the book release party for local creator Manny Trembley's new all-ages graphic novel Martin Monsterman!

Manny will be extra busy this weekend, as in addition to the release party, he'll be one of the artists drawing free sketches at Merlyns on Saturday, and will be at Tafuri Studios in the Garland district on Friday, drawing free monster sketches for their First Friday event.
This will be the 10th year for this major Portland convention, which continues to host a wide collection of some of the best independent comics and creators.

This year you'll find a couple of Spokane's own in attendance: Catbeard the Pirate's Matt Nelson and Fish Tank Books' Manny Trembley, who will be in the exhibitor area at table N-07. So swing by and check out their work if you get a chance, and let anyone else who might be attending know where they'll be.

Similar to the 24 Hour Comic Challenge, but more free-form and on a smaller scale, the general idea is to produce a completed mini-comic within one day. But what constitutes a mini-comic is really up to the creator. This is an annual national event, and you can check out the official website for more information and suggestions: Mini-Comics Day!
Emerald City was huge this year, with the show taking over the entire convention center. A lot of the local creators who were exhibiting have blogged about their experiences and posted sketches they did while there; you can check out their individual sites and social network pages for their thoughts and pics. Thanks to everyone who made it out to the Drink & Draw on Saturday night! We had a full house, including some new faces, and everyone seemed to have a lot of fun. The plan is to have the next D&D at the end of March or beginning of April - we'll update here when the specifics are nailed down, and you can join the Facebook Group for more updates, like these photos taken by event organizer Nathan O'Brien.

A reminder that this coming weekend (March 1-3) is the Emerald City ComiCon in Seattle. Also, ECCC will be having their own pre-Con Drink & Draw the night before the show, which is a great opportunity to meet and socialize with con-goers, both fans and pros. It'll be at the Daily Grill, across the street from the Convention Center, and will start at 7 pm. This is a free event to enter, but is restricted to 21 and up attendees.

In addition, Erik, Lars & Josh are three of the featured artists in this year's Monsters & Dames art book! This is a limited edition collection that Emerald City puts out each year to coincide with the convention - all of the incredible art is produced by selected guests at that year's show, and all proceeds go to benefit the Seattle Children's Hospital.

Emerald City is a great event - a comic convention that's growing each year, yet is still more about comics than anything else, and treats both the creators and fans with respect. If you have the opportunity to check it out, we highly recommend it.

This is an opportunity to show your love of comics to the world at large, and maybe remind some of the non-comic-reading public that comic books do, in fact, still exist...

Just take your favorite comic or graphic novel, or drop by your local shop and pick up something new, and find a comfy spot you can enjoy said reading material while being seen by other people. If possible, be open to inquisitive people's questions about comics and have a willingness to explain their inherent awesomeness.

You can find more information, resources, and the opportunity to meet like-minded fans at the official RCIPD Facebook page: Read Comic in Public!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3154610443400114434.post-74700054306697463042012-07-25T11:41:00.000-07:002012-07-25T11:41:31.416-07:00Batman Illustration sold to raise donations for Aurora CO victimsSelling this 5x7 Batman sketch on Etsy.
