Rich Johnston, comics writer/journalist and founder of the Bleeding Cool comic news site, has a collection of one-shot comics coming out in April, all parodies of different Marvel movie characters. Each one is illustrated by a different artist, including one - The Avengefuls - drawn by local artist Joshua Covey!
Hot off his Dark Horse Comics debut in House of Night #2, Joshua now adds another big publisher, Boom! Studios, to his credits. The books are available for pre-order in this month's Previews catalog and you can find more information about them here: Avengefuls Assembled!
Also - Joshua also has a pin-up published in last month's The Goon #37, so be sure to look for that too!

24 Hour Comic Book Day!
It's that time of year again! The 24 Hour Comic Challenge is fast approaching - this international event, now in it's 8th year, will be held October 1st - 2nd, 2011.
The Challenge is simple; you have 24 hours to create a 24 page comic - this means writing, drawing, lettering, all in one 24 hour period. This is the 5th year that the Challenge has been hosted in Spokane, and this time there will be two locations available for local participants.
The Comicsmiths' Guild will be hosting the Challenge, in a location that should be very convenient for those in the Spokane Valley area or coming from across the border in Idaho. You can RSVP at the Facebook event page: 24 Hour Challenge - Spokane Valley
The Valley Challenge will run from 8 am Saturday to 8 am Sunday, and will be held at:
Otis Orchard Community Church (Annex Bldg.)
23304 E Wellesley, Otis Orchards, WA 99027

24 Hour Comic Day is Coming! Oct. 2nd 2010
Can you draw 24 pages in 24 hours? 24 Hour Comics Day is a nation wide event, and we are fortunate enough that Merlyn's is hosting a location for Spokane for it's FOURTH YEAR! This is a big event for artists and comic fans alike! Come down and what you can draw and how long you can last. Prizes, food, activities, a piñata, cake, art supplies, raffles, movies, and more! All ages and skill levels welcome!

CSG Anthology 2011
Just a small update for everyone. Just wanted to let you know we haven't been hibernating all summer, in fact we are madly working on an upcoming anthology for the humble Comicsmiths' Guild. Our deadline looms at August 20th, so there is still a month to put it together. The artists are clamoring to show off their talents with a 2 - 4 page short story each of their liking. Currently we have two submissions in, but word from the trenches is that there will be more pages coming our way.
Once compiled, we will be mailing it off to the printers. We hope for a late September/early August release. Perhaps we can do something like a release party or something. It will be nice to have a comic that all of us have worked on together; a product we can share at our comic events throughout the year.
Our meeting will be this 3pm, Sunday, the 25th of July at Merlyns in Spokane, WA. We will be discussing the anthology as well as the next 24 Hour Comic Book Challenge! All of us are stockpiling on stimulants to make it once again. This will be the 4th year for the challenge in Spokane, and because of the 24hr challenge we all met and founded the guild.

Art On The Edge 2010 Wrap-Up
Of all the events the Comicsmiths' Guild has been a part of, this has got to have been one of my favorites.
Art On The Edge, a nonprofit youth community art program in Coeur d' Alene, did a summer day camp with the theme of superheroes this year. The founders contacted a local comic shop, Lightning Comics, to see if they knew any comic book artists who could help with the program, and they put them in touch with our group.
For the last week, we got to teach four classes of kids per day about the ins and outs of making comics. We covered creating a character, coming up with a memorable name, designing an eye-catching cover, the importance of appropriate lettering, differing art styles, and ways to lay out a page.
There's something exhilarating about sharing knowledge with people who are genuinely interested in the topic at hand. Not only that, but kids have a tendency to create without a sense that their work is too absurd, or isn't right. We had kids with characters like The Human Strawberry, or one who could throw lizards. There was even one kid who created a character (whose name I wish I could recall) which was dressed in a rainbow-colored disco suit with a giant afro.
One of my favorite moments actually came as I was waiting to wash my hands in the bathroom on the first day. I was behind two little boys who were, as little boys will, taking too long to scrub up in the sink and making a giant mess, but they then started talking about how the comics class was next and it was their favorite. That was awesome.
This being the first time we've done this, there were of course hiccups. We ran out of some supplies, and one of the comics we brought for the kids from Free Comic Book Day needed to be replaced (Good one, Marvel!) but overall, things were really smooth.
The kids were also doing other things relating to superheroes all week, and at the end, they used their characters to create colorful costumes and put on a little skit. I filmed the whole thing, which was a lot of fun, and I hope to have some clips up on YouTube in short order.
I'd like to take a moment to thank everyone who helped to make this possible, and I apologize in advance to anyone who I've forgotten:
Rachel, Levi, Jay, Peter, Jesse, Erik, Lightning Comics in Coeur d' Alene, The Comic Book Shop in Spokane, and Ami and Jeni from Art on the Edge, give yourselves a big pat on the back. You guys all helped make a fantastic experience for kids.
